Barbara “Bobbye” Bean, 84, of New Buffalo, Michigan died Saturday morning, August 27, 2011 at Jordan’s Lifecare Center in Bridgman, Michigan. Bobbye was born May 25, 1927 in Sturgis, Michigan to Horace and Harriett (Eastman) Calkins and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1945.
On February 9, 1946 she married Hewlett “Bud” Bean in Angola, Indiana. In 1953 they made their home in New Buffalo. Bobbye owned and operated Grandma’s Grocery in Union Pier, Michigan for many years and was a regular at the Thursday night ladies bowling league at Theo’s Lanes in New Buffalo. Survivors include her husband, Bud; daughters, Terri (Steve) Chrobak of LaPorte, Indiana and Susan (Mark) Guckin of Middletown, Connecticut; grandchildren, Scott, Nathan, Ryan, Joel, Sarah, Jenni, Bobbye, Erinn, Caitlyn, Edmund, AnnMarie and James and by her great grandchildren, Evan and Hayden. Her son, Hewlett “Boyd” Bean III preceded her in death in 1969.
