Mrs. Barbara Ann “Barb” Turney, 67, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at her home following an extended illness on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019 at 4:30 a.m.
She was born Dec. 8, 1951 in Whittier, CA to the late Eldon and Petranella H. “Nell” (Bouma) Murray, and later married Ronald L. Turney, Sr. in March, 2001. He survives at home after 18 wonderful years together.
Also surviving are her children Matt Newman and Teresa Dey; brothers Glenn Murray and Bill Graff, sister Diane (Les) Lake and a host of loving extended family, including her little Pomeranian buddy “Prancer”. Her first husband, Gene Dey (and father to Teresa), precedes her in death.
Barb was a tax accountant for over 30 years, but most will remember her smiling face at either the local license branch or behind the counter at the old Huck’s Gas Station on CR 20 (now Concord Mart). She was a diehard NHRA fan and she did a lot of drag racing at a younger age out west. During those times, she became friends with Shirley “ChaCha” Muldowney, America’s pioneering first lady of drag racing. She was also an avid NASCAR fan as well, and loved to cheer on her favorite #3, Dale Earnhardt. Staying true to her adventurous character, Barb also loved to travel, especially to seek out new adventures. In her later years, she enjoyed life’s more simple pleasures like spending time with her family and friends and playing with her beloved Prancer.
