Those left to honor Irene’s memory include her son, Bill (and Bobbie) Gates, Sr. of Urbandale, Iowa; her daughter, Mary (and David) Koppin of Newton; four grandchildren, Bill (and Michelle) Gates, Jr. of West Des Moines, Iowa; Chris Gates of Houston, Texas; Angela (and Bryan) Rausch of Newton; and Joe (and Shannon) Koppin of Ankeny, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; and her nephew, Jim (and Peggy) Hoyt of Oskaloosa, Iowa and her niece, JoAnn (and Marvin) Munger of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, William S. and Sarah (Mitrisin) Hart; husband, Simon in 1996; and sister, Virginia Martin.
Irene was a lifelong resident of Newton. She was a graduate of Newton High School in 1940. On May 30, 1941, she was united in marrige to Simon S. Gates, Jr. in Newton.
Irene had worked for both Hough’s Variety and Barrett’s Bakery on the west side of the Newton square prior to working 25 years for the J. C. Penney Company as the Manager of the Catalog Desk.
