Azrel Gene Stovall entered the race of life on May 9, 1949, he was the seventh child born to the late Herbert H. Stovall and Edna Fitzgerald Stovall in Decatur, Alabama.  On November 25, 2015, he crossed the finish line, a winner.  “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”  1 Corinthians 9:25

At an early age, “Gene” as he was affectionately known, united with Christ and joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where his affiliation remained until his passing.  Stovall had a great sense of humor and was an avid lover of sports.  After graduating from Central High School in Courtland, Alabama, he attended Calhoun Community College.  While running track, his speed caught the eyes of coaches at Florence State, now known as the University of North Alabama, in Florence, Alabama. His swiftness led to him signing both track and football contracts, leading to the University’s victory in many tough competitions.

A veteran of the United States Marines, Sgt. Azrel Stovall served his country with distinction and honor from 1976-1980.  He received numerous awards and medals.  Gene also played semi-pro football for several years. In his secular jobs, he was employed by Wolverine Tube and United Parcel Service.  “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith…there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.”  II Timothy 4:7-8
