Audra was born September 1, 1966 in Longmont to Don and Margaret Mercer. She grew up in Lyons and was an active member of local FFA and 4H Clubs as well as the Simmental Association. She had a passion for animals, particularly cattle.
Audra graduated high school and moved to Sterling, CO to attend NJC. She met Daniel Veik in her 1st semester at school and they were married in December 1984.
Shortly after meeting Dan, Audra gave birth to Lacey. She made a career of being a wife and mother. A few short years later, they welcomed, Justin. When the kids were old enough, Audra went to work at a local feed yard for a number of years.
Audra always had a strong interest in the criminal and justice systems and their workings. She was presented with the opportunity to become an officer for the Colorado Department of Corrections where she found her calling. Audra held this position for nearly twenty years.
She took great pride in helping both staff and offenders enjoy their time behind the walls of Sterling Correctional Facility, though prison is not a fun place, she always said that it wasn’t her job to make it any worse than it needed to be. She took special interest in supporting the offenders in their efforts to better themselves thru the canine training and the culinary arts programs.
Outside of work, Audra loved to cheer on the Broncos, listen to “good tunes”, and spending time doing special things for her grand babies. She loved a new recipe to try, reading a good mystery and telling stories over a cold beer.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret J. Mercer (Vantine).
Audra is survived by her husband, Dan Veik of Crook, her father Don Mercer of Lyons, her children, daughter Lacey King and husband Craig of Lebanon, MO, and son Justin Veik and wife Ashley of Sterling, CO. Audra is also survived by her grandchildren, Peyton & Caleb Veik, Evelyn & Otis King, and Charlotte Veiking Boucher.
Memorial donations in honor of Audra may be made to the canine training program at Sterling Correctional Facility.
