Aubrey Lester Pegram (Popie), 85, of Martinsville was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 26, 2010. He was born in Kernersville, North Carolina on April 21, 1924 to the late James Norman Pegram and Lou Ada Lineberry Pegram. He is also preceded in death by one sister, Johnsie Pegram Beeson and four brothers, William Jiles Pegram, Herbert Pegram, Herman Pegram and Elmer Floyd Pegram. Aubrey was an active member of Wilson Street Pentecostal Holiness Church for 57 years where he taught Sunday School, served as Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon. He also taught a Bible Class at the Martinsville Senior Citizen Center for many years. His dedication to the service of Christ and his compassion for others was evident to all those who knew him. He served in the Pacific US 5th Marine Division for four years and received a Purple Heart during World War II at Iwo Jima. He worked in the laundry and dry cleaning business for 38 years at County City Laundry, Hatley’s and Moorefield Cleaners before retiring in 1987. From 1987 until late 2009 when his health began to fail, Aubrey was a faithful caregiver to Mr. Walter Clark. Popie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Hall Pegram of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Pegram Carter and husband, John of Martinsville and Deborah Pegram Russell and husband, Jay of Martinsville; five grandchildren, William Michael Carter and girlfriend, Kristy Schmaus of Burlington, North Carolina, Kimberly Carter Frye and husband, Justin of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, Sarah Elizabeth Russell, Emily Michelle Russell and Audrey Grace Russell all of Martinsville; a brother, Hilary Jarvis Pegram of Asheboro, North Carolina and many nieces and nephews.
