Arthur Portinga, 92, of Stevensville, Michigan and formerly of Three Oaks, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, following an extended illness. Art was born April 29, 1920 to George and Martha (Hartog) Portinga in Three Oaks. After graduating from Three Oaks High School in 1938, he served his country in the US Navy aboard the Submarine USS Mapiro in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Art served as Chief of the volunteer Fire Department in Three Oaks for many years. He retired in 1980 from Clark Equipment Company in Buchanan, Michigan. He was a member of the Three Oaks F & A M Lodge 239 and the American Legion Post 568 of Stevensville. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and in his retirement he became a master of the card game, “Spite and Malice”.He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elsie Portinga; daughters, Vada Kray (Eugene Shawley) of LaPorte, Indiana and Peggy (Kosta) Dedo of San Carlos, California; granddaughters, Laura, Shelby, Gina, Jenny (Greg Efstratis) and 8 great grandchildren, Sarah, Riley, Elijah, Torin, Lily, Emil, Lexi and Georgia.
