Arthur J. Stattelman 92 of West Bend died Saturday May 22 at Kossuth Regional Hospital in Algona. Arthur Stattleman, the son of Edward Jacob Stattelman and Christina Bollweg was born February 24, 1918 in West Bend where he was raised and educated, graduating from the West Bend High School in 1937. On October 21, 1947 he was united in marriage with Lillian Fish, who preceded him in death in 2002. The couple lived in West Bend where Art worked at the power plant, ran the movies at the theater and had his own radio repair shop. In 1953 he moved to Ames and worked in the Electrical Engineering Department at Iowa State University. Eventually he worked in the Veterinarian Medicine Department and the National Disease Lab in Avian Medicine. His job required him to travel to Buenes Aires, Argentina and Lyon, France to the National Institute of Genetics. In 1966 he moved to Athens, Georgia and worked for the University of Georgia until 1983. While working at the university he also taught electronics at Athens Tech. In 1993 he retired and returned to West Bend. Art was an avid amateur radio operator and wine maker. He had been a volunteer firefighter and lifelong member of the Volunteer Firemens Association. He was also an inventor, one in particular he invented the confessional light. Survivors include his children: Sandy (Clair) Rasmussen of Kingston, TN, Steven (Rose) of Minneapolis, MN, Susan Mangham, Jenifer (Lamar) Phillips, Mark and Deborah and Barbara all of Athens, GA, and Brian of Clemsen, SC, 30 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren and his sister Isabella Olsen of West Bend. Art was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lillian, and his three brothers, Edward, Edwin and Leo. All memorial contributions will be made to Hospice of the Heartland, 1515 S. Phillips Street, Algona, Iowa 50511.
