Arthur Eugene Hampe Jr. died due to a sudden heart attack on Thursday, September 20, 2018.
Art was born November 19, 1966, in Britt, Iowa to Arthur Eugene Hampe Sr. and Ida Mae Hampe (Nielsen). He graduated from Twin Rivers High School in 1985, Iowa Lakes Community College in 1987, and Northwest Missouri State University in 1990 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Biology. After graduation, Art worked in the conservation field for more than 20 years, working to preserve the wetlands, lakes, and farmland that he so loved. Art graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston, Iowa, and served as a local law enforcement officer and as a firearms instructor. Art also owned a business that built and sold traps throughout the United States.
In 2014, Art restored a historic building in Bode, Iowa, and opened the Red Lantern bar, a popular destination for class reunions and other special events. Art loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, and trapping whenever he could find the time. He taught his daughter Olivia how to hunt and fish, and the joy of a day well spent on their boat. He loved the Struthers family farm and was happiest when he could hunt and enjoy the beauty of the timberland. His greatest joy was simply spending time with his wife Kari and daughter Olivia. His passing leaves a huge hole in their lives, and in the lives of his extended family and friends. Art had a wonderful sense of humor, and a kind heart, and was intensely loyal to his family and friends and would do anything for anyone.
Art is survived by his wife, Kari from West Bend, daughter Olivia, a student at Iowa State University, brother Andrew and sister Angie from Bode, and several aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art Sr. and Ida Hampe.
