Arthur Ashby, Sr., 86, Shelbyville, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at VA Hospital in Louisville following an illness. He was a native of Shelbyville and the son of the late James Gilbert Ashby, Sr. and Vina Kate Shields Ashby. He was the widower of Susie F. White Ashby. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked on the B. F. Reed farm in his early years, drove a coal truck, worked for General Electric Company until his health forced his early retirement, drove the Wheels van in Shelbyville for many years and was most recently the custodian for Commonwealth Bank and Trust Company at the Fifth and Main Streets location. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and tinkering with old cars. He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, two daughters, Eva Mae Ashby and Eva Rose Ashby Cottrell; one son, Arthur Ashby, Jr.; two sisters, Nannie C. Burley and Betty Mae Charleston and two brothers, James G. Ashby, Jr. and Thomas Ashby, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughter, Jannie M. Stone of Shelbyville; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Ashby (Alfred) Patterson of Louisville; nine grandchildren; five great-grandsons; two great-great-granddaughters and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
