Arlene Resmini Ryan (Nonnie) passed away Christmas morning at her home in Carver surrounded by loved ones at the age of ninety-seven. She was born and raised in the Bridgewater, Ma. neighborhood of Stanley. Her Italian immigrant parents had a small farm where they grew vegetables and raised livestock. Her parents were renowned for brewing Beer and making Wine during Prohibition to support the family. Arlene recalled their best customers were local police and Catholic Priests. She further claimed that when the house was eventually raided, the Irish Chief of Police was found hiding in a closet. When asked “Chief, what are you doing here?” he claimed he was conducting a private undercover investigation and sent the policemen away. She graduated from Bridgewater H.S, trained to be an R.N at the onset of WW2. and began her career as an R.N. at Boston City Hospital and was promoted to Nursing Supervisor. She was later employed as an R.N. at Bridgewater State Prison having moved home to care for her aging parents. It was at the State Prison where she met her future husband Joseph J Ryan a former WW2 combat veteran who later became a Corrections Officer. She reminisced that she saw this happy-go-lucky Irishman in the cafeteria, decided “he was the man for me” and laid out a plan. Everywhere he went she would show up and bat her eyes at him. The bowling alley, the golf course, sporting events, dance clubs until he eventually asked her out on a date. They were married in 1953. She then informed him she did not like bowling, golfing, sports or drinking. Fortunately, he also learned she was a faithful wife and loving mother. She was an active member of the St Peter’s Catholic Church in Plymouth where she played the organ for decades at morning Mass while her good friend Pearl Rossetti sang hymns like an angel. They attracted a multitude of parishioners. She was noted for her charitable works and dedication to the poor and disadvantaged. She provided wisdom and guidance to the community as a Religious Education Teacher. When informed of a misdeed by any of her children, she would dramatically declare their innocence insisting “Not my child, I brought them up better than that!” To listen to her, she had the only children on earth without sin. It was a difficult standard to live up to!She is survived by four children Patricia Reid Howe and spouse Janet, Joseph J Ryan Jr. and spouse Maribeth, Maureen Cavicchi and spouse Richard, Timothy D Ryan and spouse Denise. She is further survived by fifteen grandchildren Ryan Reid, Dana Ciriglione and Jaime Pylant, Krista Hamill, Matt Howe, Jeff Howe; Jen Duarte, Joseph, Timothy and Katelyn Ryan; Richard and Jon Cavicchi, Angelina Lindsay; Eileen and Mary Ryan. She had fourteen great grandchildren Gwen and Mason Reid; Travis and Nathan Hamill, Jacqueline and Alice Howe; Brian Duarte, Lily Ryan; Andrew Ryan; A.J. Anderson; and Nick, Aubrey, and Alex Lindsay. She also had several dozen beloved Italian and Irish nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. Our family would like to thank her dedicated caretakers from Cranberry Hospice and Perfect Health and a special thanks to granddaughter Dana and daughter-in-law Maribeth who were selfless in caring for her needs for the past seven years.
