Archie O’Neil Hopkins, age 82, of Tipton quickly followed his loving wife to the gates of Heaven on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Lula Mae (Long) Hopkins, age 78, also of Tipton went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 2, 2022. They both passed away at Colonial Oaks Health and Rehab in Marion, Indiana surrounded by those that meant the most to them in this world. Archie was born on December 30, 1939, in Claiborne County, Tennessee to his parents, William & Virginia (Fletcher) Hopkins. Lula was born on December 13, 1943, to her parents, Robert & Grace (Estes) Long in Sneedville, Tennessee.
Archie and Lula met while living in Tennessee and started their lives together over 60 years ago. They were married on December 25, 1960, raising four wonderful children, and making a lifetime of memories together!
Archie worked for 38 years at Kokomo Sanitary Pottery and did seasonal work for Pioneer, but his favorite job was at his small engine repair shop where he could put his talents to good use and get his hands dirty. Lula worked many years for Miller’s Merry Manor and Jim Dandy as a cook but the job she looked forward to the most was being a homemaker and taking care of her children.
Lula was a strong matriarch that truly enjoyed taking care of her family in whatever way they may need. She was an in charge kind of gal; no one did anything with more love than Lula. She always made sure Archie and their children wanted for nothing. In her free time, she enjoyed being outdoors and working crossword puzzles.
The old saying goes that opposites attract and that seemed to ring true for Archie & Lula. As Lula was comfortable being in charge, Archie was as easy going as they came. He loved to kid around and was he ever ornery! He had a love for helping others and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed his quiet time on the water with a fishing pole in his hand.
One thing they had in common was their love for their family, whether it was their children, grandchildren, or extended family. They had a special needs son, Kenneth, that was their Angel on earth before he passed away in December 10, 2018 at 56 years old. Can you imagine the reunion they shared, and to top it all off, January 5th was Kenneth’s birthday!
Those left to carry on Archie & Lula’s legacy of love are their children, Karon (Keith) Wilson, Sharon McCoy, Kathy (Kenny) Kerr; grandchildren, Kristin (Aaron) Wall, Michael (Jennifer) Ramey, Shana Lantz, Stacey (Joey) Mitchell, Sarah (Joe) Michael, Travis (Brittany) Kerr, Kara (Daniel) Musgrave; 14 great grandchildren; Lula’s siblings, JoAnn Smith, Opal Ferguson, Tip (Rilda) Long, Carolyn Mullins, Nellie (Ken) Cinnamon, Estel (Alice) Long, Gary (Gail) Long, Jane (Roger) Shockley; Lula’s sister-in-law, Hazel Long; Archie’s brothers, Dwight Hopkins and William (Stacey) Hopkins; Archie’s uncle, Wayne Fletcher that was more like a brother to him; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
