Archie Lee Stewart, 85, a native and resident of the Salitpa community of Jackson, answered the Master’s call Sunday, Dec. 17, 2018, at Jackson Medical Center. He was born Feb, 7, 1933, to Claude “Hop” and Sadie Woodson Stewart.

Archie was a faithful and dedicated member of the Springfield AME Zion Church in Salitpa, where he served as a trustee, steward, choir member, and as a member of Sons of Varick and the Springfield Male Chorus. He was also a devoted caretaker of the church grounds and property. He retired from the International Paper Company after dedicating 45 years of service.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, O.C. Stewart, S.T. Stewart and Ephren Stewart; and two sisters, the Rev. Bernice Roper and Clausella Parker.

He will forever be loved and cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Virgie Roper Stewart of Salitpa; son, Samuel Lee Stewart of Salitpa; five daughters, Mary Alice Jackson of Jackson, Edith (Randall) Bumpers of Winn, Shelia (Elbert) McCants of Toddtown, Sandra (Donald) Cox of Coffeeville and Deborah Stewart of Saraland; 12 devoted grandchildren, 16 devoted great-grandchildren and a host of step-grandchildren; one brother, John Curtis Stewart of Jersey City, N.J.; three sisters, Pearlie Jackson of McIntosh, Hazel Hayes of Salitpa and Jessie Stewart of Jackson; four sisters-in-law, Mary Burroughs of Grove Hill, Betty Chapman of Selma, Ella Thrash of Cincinnati, Ohio and Essie Hall of Chicago, Ill; with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, devoted friends George, Jay, Glenn W. and Chris.
