Antonio De La Garza

April 30, 1944 – May 12, 2015

SANTA ROSA ,TX. – Antonio “Tony” De La Garza passed away on May 12, 2015 surrounded by his devoted wife of 49 years, his daughters and grandchildren early Tuesday in Sugar Land, Texas. Known for an infectious sense of humor, his laugh and antics were well understood by those closest to him. He was an avid fisherman and was in his element casting into the Arroyo with his five girls in tow. After finally gaining five sons-in-laws, he quickly adapted to golf and enjoyed many hours trying to keep up with them on the golf course. His greatest joy, however, was his wife and traveling to visit his children and grandchildren.Tony, as family and friends knew him, was born on April 30, 1944 to Anita and Monce De La Garza in their home in Santa Rosa, Texas. He attended Santa Rosa High School and during his junior year, received his barber’s license which enabled him to open Tony’s Barber Shop in Santa Rosa. He then graduated in 1964 and joined the U.S. Army Reserve after high school. Years later, he earned a position as a full-time fire fighter in Harlingen where he devoted many long hours to serving the community. He learned basic firefighting and lifesaving skills that he put to use as one of the founding members of the Santa Rosa Volunteer Fire Department. To allow more time with his family, Tony later accepted a position at Borden’s, Inc. where he worked for just over a decade. In his later years, he was able to use his exceptional skills as a carpenter to fulfill his dream of building and renovating homes.Antonio is survived by his wife Chris De La Garza, his five daughters and their husbands: Michelle and Alvaro Parra, Sharon and Chris Mulholland, Cindy and Louis De La Garza, Christy and Mike Espinosa, and Dee Dee and Andrew Aranda, his grandchildren Juan, Jacob, Laura and Alexa Parra, Ellen and Shea Mulholland, Thomas and Matthew De La Garza, Kenneth De La Garza, Angelina and Abigail Espinosa, Stephen Balderas and Ethan Aranda. He is also survived by his sisters: Lee (Tim) Bowen, Elvia (Johnny) Sanchez, and nephew James Bowen. He also leaves behind four great grandchildren with two more on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Monce and Anita De La Garza.
