Anthony S. Maggio, 69, of Washington passed away Thursday January 7, 2016 at his residence with family by his side.
He was born on October 13, 1946 in Peoria, the son of Samuel and Maxine Werner Maggio.
He married Judy Schertz on December 7, 1968 in Washington. Surviving is his wife, two daughters Mindy (Randy) Keller of Washington and Melissa (James) Wireman of Washington. Also surviving are three grandchildren Jay, Shelby and Adam, two sisters Madeline (Estel Schram) Snider of Marquette Heights, Sandy (Richard) Heiser of Culpeper, Va. and one stepbrother Paul Swanson of Eminence, Mo. His parents and stepfather Howard Swanson preceded him in death.
Tony enlisted with U.S. Navy in 1964 last serving on the USS Enterprise until being discharged in 1967. He then worked at the Peoria Journal Star from 1968 until his retirement in 2007.
He began working at the Washington Police Department on October 26, 1987 starting as an auxiliary officer and dispatcher. He became a fully commissioned Washington officer on February 21, 2005 and in 2010 he was appointed sergeant and supervisor for the part time police unit and in 2012 he was appointed commander in charge of the part time unit. He was Washington Police Department part time officer of the year in 2012. Tony was also instrumental in designing the current patch for the officer’s uniforms.
