Annie Ruth Slaughter was born on February 9, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana to his parents, Bud McAlpin and Edna Washington McAlpin. She was the first born child in the family. She was raised surrounded by her sisters, Sandra and Donita. Annie eventually relocated to Denver, Colorado and completed her early education by graduating from East High School in 1955. On July 20, 1956, Annie united in holy matrimony to Ronald Leroy Slaughter. They first met at the Glenarm Recreation Center in Denver. To this union, three beautiful children, D’Ne, Cortney, and Clayton were born. They all shared many happy and precious memories together. D’Ne fondly remembers her mother making sure she was dressed properly for any occasion when leaving home. Clayton fondly remembers the camping trips to Lake McConaughy and the house parties at the family home. Later her grandchildren Roderick, Eric, Chris, Preston, Kimbra, Darius and Julianna were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They too all have many happy and memorable moments of special time shared together. By profession, Annie was employed for a longtime by Governor Love as his personal secretary. She also was employed by Rocky Flats. She served as a Human Rights and Community Director for Mountain Bell and AT&T. She was also an EEOC employee for the Honorable Wellington Webb during his term as Mayor of the City and County of Denver. She retired in 2000. Having a need to continue working, she became an employee for Child Opportunity for some time after retiring. Annie was actively involved in several civic and community activities. She was a member of the Colorado Coalition of 100 Black Woman; she had been a member of the Denver Owl’s Club since 1955. She received several awards for her outstanding leadership and dedication. She was recognized by her employer’s over the years for outstanding work performance and always going beyond the call of duty. She was a member of a group of distinguished ladies affectionately called “The Motley Mama’s” they shared many happy moments together. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Annie accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very early age.
