Annie Mae Pope, our beloved mother, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, August 1. Annie Mae is preceded in death by her husband Waylon H. Pope, parents Emilie Schroeder Bryan and John D. Bryan; sister Lela Bryan Ward; and brothers Virgil Bryan, Walt Bryan, Lloyd “Pep” Bryan.

Annie Mae was born and raised in Fort Payne, AL. She moved to North Georgia in the 1940s.

Annie Mae and Waylon had a loving marriage–something to admire. If you asked them how they met, they would tell you a story that may or may not be true.  When playing horseshoes with a group, Waylon told his friends that he would marry the next woman to throw a ringer.  Annie Mae threw that ringer and the rest is history. True or not, their lifelong loving marriage was very special!  Traveling, bowling, boating, and fishing were just a few of the activities that kept them busy.

Annie Mae is survived by her son Michael D. Pope (Bethe); daughters, Barbara Pope Verhine (Jimmy, “Vernie”) and Tina Pope Carroll (Scott).   She has six grandchildren: Lindsay Pope Pendergrass (Chris), David Pope (Jamie), Eric Verhine (Cason), Emily Verhine, Marie Carroll, and Michelle Carroll.  She has six great-grandchildren: Jax Pendergrass, Ben Pendergrass, Emma Pope, Grayson Pope, Hannah Verhine, and Soren Verhine.

Our family appreciates the special care provided by the staff of NHC Fort Oglethorpe and Hospice of Chattanooga. You hold a special place in our hearts.
