WHITE BIRD: Long time Salmon River rancher, Anneliese (Ann) F. Zumwalt, 79 passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016 at her home in White Bird.

Ann was born in Obendorf/Oste, Germany, where she met and married John Kroencke. In 1956 they came to the states with their 6-month-old son. Three years later they had a daughter. They later divorced.

In 1962 she married Frank Zumwalt, together they bought and ran a ranch at White Bird, throughout their lives. Ann and Frank had two sons.

Ann loved her cows, and continued to do as much as she could do in the last years of her life. Everyone will miss seeing her patrolling Deer Creek, sitting on a pull out on the forest, and at her spot on the river across from Taylor Bar, with her ever-ready field glasses.

She got her citizenship in the 70’s of which she was very proud. She was also a long-time Rebekah and EMT. Ann was a self-made seamstress, and labored for days to make her gowns for lodge.
