Anna May Gardner, 63, of Crawfordsville passed away Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis of non-cardiovascular related problems.
Mrs. Gardner was the first person to receive a heart transplant in the State of Indiana at Methodist Hospital on October 31, 1982. She received a second hart transplant in April of 1997. She dedicated her life to family and friends and to educating others about organ and tissue donation and helping others waiting transplants.
Mrs. Gardner participated in the Transplant Games in different cities around the world. She is retired from the Indiana State Highway Commission.
She is survived by her son Ron Melvin of Crawfordsville and Atlanta, GA; Stepdaughter Jeri Remley of Crawfordsville; Nephews Darin (Paula) Hutson of Crawfordsville; Derrick (Niki) Hutson of Crawfordsville; Step niece Lisa (Fred) Roth of Brownsburg; Sister in Law Shirley (Tom) Welsh married to her late brother Carl R. Snyder and also raised Annie and Joan; Brother in Law Sonny (Laura) Hutson married to late sister Joan M. Hutson; 6 Step Grand Children, Furry Children Fluffy and Socks.
Preceding Mrs. Gardner in death is her late husband Frank E. Gardner, Father Cletus Snyder, mother Emma Ruth Springer, Brother Carl R. Snyder, Brother Paul L. Snyder, Sister Joan M. Hutson and Sister Elaine Snyder.
She was a member of the Church of God in Crawfordsville; she was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Bob Orr. Member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 72, Club 1310, Republicans Women’s Club, Republican Precinct Committeeman, Eagles 1005, Moose Lodge 6.
