Ann Murphy, 95 years young, affectionately known as Aunt Annie to her many nephews and nieces, died peacefully Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born on June 12, 1917, in Elkhart to George and Kathryn Surma. Aunt Annie was one of four children.

She had many nephews, nieces and friends who loved her dearly and who benefitted from her wisdom, dependability and commitment to her recently deceased husband of 67 years, Uncle Shorty. All who knew her, especially those who knew and loved her as Aunt Annie, will miss her dearly.

Ann Murphy retired from Miles after a long career. She worked at Miles with Gin and Ceal Murphy, the sisters of her late husband. Legend has it that these three women, much ahead of their time for workplace equality, actually ran Miles, which is now known as Bayer.

All of the nephews and nieces remember having plenty of Alka Seltzer and Vick’s around the house to fight upset stomachs and colds, courtesy of their aunts, Annie, Gin and Ceal. Aunt Annie was also known for her sharp wit, independence and keen attention to household management right up to her last visit to the hospital.

She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart.
