Bennett, Ann Garrett Gracefully passed away at her cottage on Lake Michigan on August 4, 2016. Age 93. She divided her residence between her cottage on Lake Michigan and her (apartment) – residence — at the Fountains at Bronson Place. Ann was born in Kalamazoo on February 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Charles Edward Garrett and Marie (Welch) Garrett.
She attended elementary school at Western Normal School and then Western State High School for two years, before graduating from St. Mary’s Academy at Notre Dame in 1940. She attended Kalamazoo College from 1940 – 1942 and then entered Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., graduating in 1944. She returned to Kalamazoo and earned a private pilot license with a sea plane engine rating, while a control chemist at American Cyanamid Chemical Company.
She then joined Garrett Insurance Agency, leaving in 1948 to marry Attorney Lorenzo Thompson (Tom) Bennett. They had four children, Kathryn “Solley” Joyce Bennett, Charles Garrett Bennett, Thomas Timerman Bennett and Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Bennett; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her older brother, Charles “Chick” E. Garrett Jr. and her younger sister, Joyce Helen Garrett Alexander. Ann served in Kalamazoo service clubs, the Airport Advisory Board until 1960, the American Red Cross Board until 1962 and the YMCA Board & Tennis Chairperson until 1960 and served with Ministry with Community. She belonged to St. Augustine Cathedral, St. Thomas More Catholic Student Parish, St. Peter Catholic Church in Douglas, MI and St. Basil Catholic Church in South Haven, MI. She was an avid tennis player and belonged to her beloved Tuesday Tennis Club for over fifty year.
