Angie McCauley Richardson was born in Columbia, MS to Ardella Lewis McCauley and Walter McCauley on October 7, 1926. It was there in Columbia  that she grew up, attended and completed elementary and high school. After receiving her high school diploma, she was off to Columbia Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina where she pursued a diploma in nursing.

Ambitious and anxious to explore, Angie went to New York in 1952. She worked at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, New York where she became Head Nurse of the maternity unit.

On leave from Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, Angie worked with the Kellogg Foundation as the liaison person in developing the classroom and clinical aspects of the first LPN program developed for Mississippi Valley College in Itta Bena, Mississippi. One year later, Angie returned to Brooklyn Jewish Hospital where she functioned as nursing supervisor while.completing a  Baccalaureate  Degree.

In 1956 Angie joined the US Air Force Nurse Corps as First Lieutenant.

The military carried Angie to Portland, Oregon where she met and married the late Alfred C. Richardson. To this union were born two children; Roger Walter Richardson and Ardella Joy Richardson Powell.  She enjoyed a special relationship with her step-son,  Alfred C.Richardson, Jr. who she sometime referred to as her “number one son,” taken from the Charlie  Chan Series.

She continued her love for her  profession through  various levels of nursing at Providence Hospital, Park Royal Health Care- C care Center, and Kaiser Permanente Foundation.

In 1985, Angie moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and continued her profession in the office of her nephew, Dr. Charles A.

Angies civic activities included: member of the Nativity Episcopal Church, Association of Black Cardiologist, Columbia Hospital Alumni Association,  Society of Retired  Air Force Nurses and Eta Phi Beta Sorority. She served on The Board  of Hospice of Wake County and Boards of several Home Health Agencies. Angie volunteered at the American Cancer Society teaching community groups.

Norman Cook, Angie’s beloved  brother, who she was very close with and devoted to, preceded her in death.  She  is survived by two devoted children ; her son, Roger Walter Richardson of Chandler, Arizona and her daughter, Ardella Joy Richardson Powell of Wheaton, Maryland, five grandchildren; LaToya N. Eubanks, Antonio S. Richardson, Romeo A. Richardson, Chardai A. Powell, and Dominique A. Powell, Sister Ethel I. Molet of Columbia MS and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In the words of her son, Roger, “Mom was always so logical about things and always gave you something to think about, never pushing things on you but looked at the logical side of things. She was always very involved in what ever she did 100%. Even today people always talk about how she was the nurse for the Pop Warner football team in Portland Oregon. She was a Cub Scout den mother as well as A team nurse for my high school football team. Mom was very well known in the community and stayed proactive in what ever her children were involved in.”

Angie was always able to reach others in finding a way to bring about change when needed. She always had a listening ear. She was compassionate soft-spoken and yet well received. Everyone who met her remembered her, quiet, yet her presence was well known. She was  lady enough to ask a man to help her, yet woman enough to do it herself!!

A lover of nature and the outdoors which included gardening, golfing, camping and especially fishing. Angie always kept a fishing rod and tackle box in the trunk of her Mercedes. She often spoke about being as close to nature as possible. And that’s the Angie that everyone knew and grew to love.
