Angelo Vito Luongo, age 87, of Boynton Beach, Florida, formally from New Rochelle, New York (Westchester County) and Woodbourne, New York (Catskill Mountains), peacefully passed on to eternal life on October 31, 2015, with his loving family by his bedside, after a lengthy and courageous battle with a debilitating neurological disease.
He was born on September 30, 1928 in Andretta, Italy, to Sabino Luongo and Stella Caserta he was the eldest of three children.
He served in the Italian military and was a police officer for many years with the Italian State Police. In 1957 he married the love of his life, Gerarda Marotta. They resided in Rome with his son Sabino. Although they had a beautiful life in Rome, he wanted to live in the land of opportunity and pursue the American dream and came to the United States in 1961. He embraced his new homeland with vigor, pride and loyalty. He was a true patriot. He loved this country and was always proud to be a US citizen and an American. He worked for, United Press International (UPI), in New York City (now known as Associated Press), for 26 years as a Communications Computer Technician until his retirement in 1963. Among his proudest accomplishments during his tenure with UPI were working the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. He was highly respected by his colleagues and was always sought out to troubleshoot difficult problems. The motto by many at UPI was Call Angelo, he can fix it!
He was a dedicated son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his devoted and loving spouse of 58 years, Gerarda (Dina) Luongo (Marotta) of Boynton Beach, FL; beloved children, Sabino (Sam) Luongo of Bronx, NY and daughter, Stella of Jupiter, FL; grandchildren, Angela, Michael, and Anthony of NY; brothers Ettore (spouse Rosaria) and Antonio, of Naples, Italy. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Stella and Giuseppe Luongo, Emilio and Domenick Marotta, Josephine Santamauro (Marotta), Emilio and Rina Marotta; many great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Henrietta Marotta; and many cousins and wonderful friends throughout the country, Italy and Canada.
He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, and mushroom picking. Some of his enjoyments were making homemade wine, brandied cherries, grappa, limoncello, and Italian sausage.
He loved the sunshine and the warm weather. He enjoyed going to the beach and never got tired of staying in the sun. He enjoyed golfing and would spend hours at the golf range. He and his wife were snowbirds for many years until 2009, sharing time between their homes in Florida in the winter and in the Catskill Mountains in the summer.
He was a man of integrity and perseverance. He always took the high road and believed in doing the right thing. He was strong willed and never gave up hope he fought hard until the very end until the disease got the best of him.
He seldom enjoyed going out to eat, but when he did, he enjoyed Domenics Restaurant in Boynton Beach, FL, where he would order his favorite dish Snapper Livornese. He very often commented no one cooks better than my wife!
