On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 29, 2015, Andy Watcher, 89, of Severn, MD passed away peacefully at his home in the comfort of his wife and family following a battle with cancer. Andy was born in the town of Duncott, PA on April 17, 1926 and was the son of the late Samuel and Anna Watcher.
Andy enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 31, 1944 and proudly served his Country for the next thirty years and four months until his retirement on December 31, 1974. During the course of his service, Andy experienced combat duty in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He earned numerous awards during his career, including two Bronze Star Medals, the Army Air Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, the World War II Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal with six Bronze Stars, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. However, above all of these, Andy cherished and was most proud of his Combat Infantry Badge. Upon retirement from the U.S. Army, Andy worked for an additional nine years at a dining facility in Ft. Meade, MD.
Andy was an avid New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed gardening and bird watching. Andy was also a member of the American Legion.
Andy was the husband of Margarete (Fey) Watcher, his beloved wife of 56 years. Andy is also survived by his six children and their families, Bert Cochrun of Whispering Pines, NC; Sue Osborn of Richmond, KY; Mary Watcher of Huachuca City, AZ; Andrew Watcher of Westminster, MD; Johnny Watcher of Severn, MD; and Rodney Watcher of Martinsburg, WV. The children’s families include ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Andy is also survived by his brother, Charley Watcher, and his family of Pottsville, PA. Eight siblings preceded Andy in death.
