Amos Meyer, age 85, of Algona, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Algona.

Amos Arthur Meyer was born on Feb. 11, 1930 on the family farm near Lotts Creek, Iowa. His parents, Wilhelm H. and Arina (Ohm) Meyer raised him to be a Christian man attending Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lotts Creek. Amos attended Immanuel Lutheran School from Kdg. thru the 8th grade. He attended Algona High School and graduated in 1948. Amos was in the school choir, was the F.F.A. President from 1947-48, and played 1st base on the Bulldog Baseball team.

He joined the U.S. Army from 1951-1954. He was first stationed in Atlanta, Georgia. He married LeeAnn Hanselman on Dec. 30, 1951 at Peace Lutheran Church in West Bend. Cpl. Meyer then served overseas in Korea during the Korean War in which he was awarded 2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. Cpl.

Meyer and his wife LeeAnn spent the remainder of his US Army term at Camp Carson at the Rocky Mtn. Arsenal in Denver, CO. After completing his service in the U.S. Army, Amos and LeeAnn returned to the Meyer family farm in Lotts Creek to farm and raise their family. They later moved to Decorah, IA for several years where he owned and operated the Meyer Insurance Agency. They decided to move back to Algona where he worked at Everds Bros. Construction before opening and owning Meyer Garden Center for over 25 years.

After retiring he moved into town and worked part time in the realty business for several more years. Amos kept busy with gardening, playing cards with family and friends, watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and working puzzles. Left to cherish Amos’s memory are his children: Gary (Desiree) Meyer of Ankeny, Keith (Linda) Meyer of Mesa, AZ, Craig (Lieselle)Meyer of Cumming, GA, Lori Cleare of Houston, TX, Dennis Meyer of Johnston, Linda (Tom)Bjustrom of Whittemore, and Karen (Dave) Golwitzer of Algona, 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Sister, Doris Meyer of San Antonio, TX, brothers Ronald of West Bend, and Dean(Marlene) of Algona, Sister-in-law Delores Meyer of Algona. Brothers-in-law Donnie and Eugene Hanselman of West Bend and Earl Krug of Colorado Springs,CO. Sister-in-law Edith Glossen of Humboldt.

Amos was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, LeeAnn, on May 10, 2015. His parents, brother Kenneth, and sister LaVonne Garman, brother-in-law Rich Garman, sister-in-law Betty Meyer. His mother and father-in-law, George and Grace Hanselman, sisters-in-law, Eldora Krug, Rita Hanselman, and Janie Hanselman, and brother-in-law Richard Hanselman.
