Alvin Fielding Wells passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016; he was 92. Al is the son of Newton Sawyer Wells and Martha Vanderkooi. Al was born, raised and lived in Willard and was educated in the Box Elder schools and at Weber State where he earned a degree in geology. He married Laura Talbot and raised a son and two daughters. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple. Al was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints and has served in numerous callings including ward clerk and counselor in the Bishopric. Al served on the Willard City Council for 16 years. Al worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and after receiving his degree he went to work for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and worked in the materials lab as an inspector for 25 years. Al enjoyed working in his peach orchard and swimming in his backyard pool that he built himself. Over the last several years dementia then Alzheimer’s have caused Al to re-live some events over and over causing heart aches for some and head aches for others. He sometimes worried that he was going to have to go back in the army. Al served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in New Guinea, the American Theater of Operations, the Asiatic Pacific Theater and the Philippines Liberation. Most of his duties involved ‘field radio communications’ and ‘anti-aircraft gunner’ from a ‘half track’. Al received numerous honors including expert marksman with the M-1 rifle as well as receiving a letter from President Harry Truman. On one occasion while being bombed Al jumped into a fox hole where he lit on a bayonet that went through his knee which caused him problems for the rest of his life. Al also suffered from malaria and jungle rot acquired in the Pacific.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, a twin brother Alfred, a sister Jeanetta, five half brothers, a half sister, his daughter Marie, a granddaughter Cherice, a great granddaughter, a great grand son and a great great grand son.
Al is survived by his wife Laura, his son Michael (Kathryn) of Harrisville and a daughter Rhonda (Michael Anderson) of Brigham City, and many grand kids and great grand kids.
