Alva “Tex” Hammond, 84, a 64 year resident of Glen Burnie, died April 4th at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born April 29, 1924, near Oneonta, New York. As a Quartermaster in the Navy on two wooden minesweepers during World War II, he served in China and Okinawa before being stationed in Annapolis. At a USO dance in Glen Burnie, he met and later married Gloria Behrens.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 40 for over 60 years, and one of the founding fathers of the Glen Burnie Moose Lodge 1456. In the early 1950’s, he and four other cab drivers owned their own cabs and started the Associated Cab Stand. He drove cynder block trucks for Maisel Brothers, school buses for Anne Arundel County, charter buses for Clydes Bus Service, and had his rural route for the Glen Burnie Post Office until he retired in 1983. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, who died January 1990 after 44 years of marriage. Survivors include his companion Jeanette Kern; his children, Patricia Pearsall, her husband Roy, and Michael Hammond; grandchildren, Nicole Wehn and Michael C. Hammond; and four great-grandchildren.
