ALOURDES BELLEGARDE — Alourdes Bellegarde, 85, peacefully passed away at home on January 9, 2022, in Queens, NY. She was born January 9, 1937, in Port Au Prince, Haiti, the daughter of Leon Theus and Gracieuse Bellegarde. Tragically, Alourdes’ mother passed away after she was born and Alourdes was raised by her aunt, Doullion. Though her father preferred that she stay with him, he remained present in her life allowing her to be close with her siblings from her father’s side.

Alourdes completed grade school before taking on her independence and becoming a seamstress/embroidery designer. She later met Ernest Salomon who became the father of her two children, Michelle and Jean Salomon.

In 1978, Alourdes moved to the United States, to join her children who moved there 6 years prior with their father. It didn’t take long before she was able to find her way in this new country.
She attended English classes in a Jewish school in Brooklyn, NY where she was able to learn how to speak, read, and write in English. She became a US citizen, worked as a home health aide, and got an apartment in Brooklyn, NY where she lived for over 30 years. Alourdes was very active in her church and enjoyed singing in the church choir at Evangelical Crusade of South Winners Church. She also enjoyed cooking traditional meals, baking cakes, and making crémas. Alourdes was known for her charismatic dance moves on the dance floor whenever Kompa was playing.

Of all of her life successes, Alourdes was most proud of her family. She was able to see her daughter, Michelle, get married to Roger Samuel and have four beautiful sons, Roger Jr., Cliff, Edwin, and Kendrick Samuel; and her son, Jean, get married to Maryse Dubourg and have five wonderful children, David, Maryssa, Samantha, Christal, and Sabrina Salomon. It was the family that she cherished the most that surrounded her during her last few hours on Earth as she peacefully went with Christ on her birthday. This was the most suitable way for the family to show their love for the person who was the foundation of it all.

In addition to her parents and the father of her children, Alourdes was predeceased by her two brothers, Jean and Jocelyn Theus.

Surviving in addition to her children and grandchildren are her sisters, Marie, Gladys, Paula, Luce, Myrtha, Claudette, Josette, and Nicole Theus; brothers, Fritz, Leon Jr., and Mark Theus; great-grandchildren Jacob, Jordan, Aviva, and Mekhi Samuel and Levi Jean Salomon.
