Alma Rucker was born on April 6, 1929 in Caldwell Texas, to Virgil and Ethel Jefferson. She was the oldest of three children. Alma grew up in a loving family with her sister Rutha Mae and brother Charles. Alma was raised in Dallas, TX where she received her formal education. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Alma’s family moved to Denver when she was 20 years old. She was un-impressed with Denver, feeling that it was a “One Horse Town” with little excitement. She soon changed her mind when she discovered the Five Points neighborhood. Before she was old enough to go into the Rossonian Hotel. She would look through the window, hoping to get a glimpse of some of the star attractions like Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and others. After coming of age, one of her favorite spots was the Porters and Waiters Club. She was a person who never met a stranger. Alma worked as a Waitress/Cashier at Buster’s Bar B Q, and later at Big Chef’s. She worked various jobs serving others. She worked as a Teachers Aid, for the Denver Public Schools, at Corey Elementary and retired from that position. Alma was a woman of God.
