Alma was born to John and Anna Sarbacher on March 31, 1930 in Ferdinand, Idaho. She was the second of 4 children. She attended elementary school at Icicle Flat and high school in Ferdinand, Idaho through the 10th grade.
Alma worked in her mother’s restaurant. According to Alma’s memoirs “In April at the end of my sophomore year this sailor (Vince) came to the restaurant one day and I guess he liked what he saw and asked me to a movie and the rest of the story is we were married Nov.
