Alma E. Deckard, 102, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Meadowood. Born August 17, 1908, to Ben and Eva Morris, she graduated from Bloomington High School in 1924. She attended Indiana University and worked as secretary to the sales manager of the Showers Furniture Company. In 1929 she married Ralph O. Deckard, a 1928 graduate of Indiana University, who operated various furniture and automotive businesses in Bloomington. Together they founded Full-O-Pep Appliance Corporation. She was then secretary to the Athletic Director of Indiana University (which meant during each sports season also being secretary to whatever coach was in play). She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph O. Deckard; a sister-in-law, Mable Poisant; her brother, Wayne Morris (and wife, Frances); and a niece, Joann Jett. She is survived by her adoring son, Norman Deckard and daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Deckard as well as three grandchildren; Anne Hyde (and husband, Ronnie), Daniel Deckard (and wife, Maria), and Sara Wisen (and husband, Matt), seven great grandchildren; Laura Hyde-Durfree (husband, Jeff), Jake Hyde, Bailey, Austin and Kirby Anstead, Dylan and Elvin Deckard; three step great grandchildren, Luke, Sam and Zack Wisen; and nephew, Jim Morris (wife, Nan). Alma was a member of the Church of Christ, first attending the Fourth and Lincoln Street location and then North Central Church of Christ, North Dunn Street. She was a dedicated Christian her entire life who read her Bible every day, took part in many Bible studies and passed on tremendous knowledge to her son and grandchildren. She was a member of the Husmor Extension Club for many years. She helped her husband, Ralph in many Lions Club projects and traveled throughout the world with him in his capacity as a Lions Club International Director. In later years she helped Ralph establish the annual Lions Club Grapefruit and Orange Sale throughout the state of Indiana. Her greatest joy was visiting, looking after and loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was able to keep up with their activities and be entertained by them to the very end. What a wonderful century of Christian living!
