Alma M. Clay

She attended Marshalltown Public Schools. In the fall of 1949, she went on a blind date arranged by a girlfriend. Her date was a young man from Gilman, Iowa, Charles Clay, recently discharged from the Army. They were married the following January, on a bitterly cold day in Des Moines. They were accompanied by Charles’s sister, Donna and her husband Lester. They made their home in Marshalltown. To this union three children were born Jeri, Greg, and Tammy.

She was a homemaker until her children were grown and then worked at Mode-O-Day and D’Allen’s dress shops in Chariton. In the late sixties, the grandchildren started coming which kept her busy spoiling them and doing one of her favorite things, rocking the babies.

She enjoyed fishing, needlework, reading and cooking. She was well known for her homemade beef and noodles, party mix, and potato salad which according to Harlan Ranshaw, was the best in the world. Sorry Delores.

She treasured her friends Rachael Davis, Rosie Shore, and Marlene Stone and held them close to her heart for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings and also her dear friends, Rachael and Marlene.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles, her son, Greg, her daughters, Jeri and Tammy, 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
