Allen Richard Jones 75, of Middletown, CT passed away into eternal rest on Monday, July 1, 2019 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. He was born on January 27, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Everett and Ida Mae (Baker) Jones.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University, Allen taught in Smithfield County, Virginia, and then he moved to Hartford, Connecticut. He was awarded his master’s degree from Central Connecticut State University and later pursued his 6th year and doctoral degrees at UCONN – the University of Connecticut. He worked at Barnard Brown Elementary and Quirk Middle School as an art teacher, and at West Middle as a Vice Principal. He later moved on to the Hartford Public Schools’ Central office as Director of the Arts.
Allen continued to work with students after retirement. He joined the administration at Highville Charter School in Hamden and later New Haven, CT, and continued to work as a formal and informal educational consultant until his demise.
Mr. Jones also served as an Educational Consultant at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford. Throughout his tenure SES became a reality for struggling students – many of whom are now success stories – and the daycare center evolved.
AJ was larger than life with the personality to match. He was quick with a smile and conversation: he was a kind, gentle and jovial man. An artist at heart, as Director of the Arts he held the annual Music Extravaganza where hundreds of Hartford students took to the Bushnell stage, and had their art and music works displayed in public settings throughout the city.
Allen is survived by his wife, Cecilia, his brother, Walter Jones and his sister, Cynthia Jones – Lampley. His children are Alex (2 grandchildren), Alyssa, Jacqui, and Eric. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins of the Baker and Ford families in Virginia.
