Allan W. “Al” Sandberg, 68 of Union, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at I.U. Health Goshen Hospital, after a battle with melanoma.

Al was born on July 29, 1947 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, British West Indies, to John Warren Sandberg and Graeme (Jetley) Ward. He married the love of his life, Susan K. Kern on June 13, 1986 in Union.

Susan survives as well as his son Blake Allan Sandberg of Middlebury; brother Murray (Kathy) Sandberg of Henderson, Nev., sister Katharine “Kay” Sandberg of Aspen, Colo.; and many special nieces and nephews, who survive him as well. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Bortner.

Al worked as a marketing manager in the R.V. Industry for many years. He was a 1965 graduate of Elkhart High School, where he excelled in sports. Al graduated from Indiana University, where he held the record for the qualifications at Little 500 for many years.  He served in the U.S. Army for 10 years from 1969 until his honorable discharge in 1979, with the rank of Captain.  Al loved living at Coverdale Lake, where he enjoyed lake life and sailing his Hobie Cat, and entertaining his family and friends with his awesome cooking skills and famous BBQ.   He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Maplecrest Country Club in Goshen. He liked to watch sports, especially I U Basketball.
