JAGER, Alko Kalamazoo Went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 4, 2009. Alko was born April 30, 1913 in Kalamazoo, the son of Henry and Gertrude Hoogerman Jager and was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area. During his working years, Alko was employed by James River for 27 years and the Portage Public Schools for 17 years, retiring in 1978. He had graduated from Western Michigan University, where he earned his BS and MA in Education, in 1961.
He had been a member of Third Reformed Church for many years, where he served as a Deacon, an Elder and Sunday School superintendant. In 1974 he became a member of Grace Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an Elder. Alko and his wife, Ellen, enjoyed wintering in Florida for many seasons. Alko is survived by his wife, Ellen Kuiper Jager, whom he married on June 21, 1932 and they celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary last June. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Henry Shirley Jager of Kalamazoo, Alko Patrillia Jager of Portage and Frances V. David Alkema of Jenison; 12 grandchildren; many great and great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Clarissa E. Kloosterman; a grandson, Kenneth Kloosterman; 2 great grandsons; 3 brothers; and 3 sisters.
