On July 16, 2018, Alice (Klein) Slager of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away after a brief illness. Alice was born on March 3, 1918, one of six children born to Sake and Jansje Klein.
Alice grew up in Detroit, Michigan. After graduation from high school, she worked for ten years at the Sanders candy company, then attended Calvin College. Soon after her arrival there, she met Kenneth Slager, a Marine just back from World War II. They were married on August 26, 1949, in the Calvin Seminary Chapel. Ken graduated from seminary in 1953, and he and Alice began their lives of ministry to five Christian Reformed Churches in Minnesota, Iowa, and Washington.
Alice was excited about each move and passed that enthusiasm on to her seven children. At every new home, she made friends that lasted long beyond the time in that particular community. In each place she lived, she enthusiastically supported and joined service projects, many without any recognitiona”to this day her children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren follow her example. A prolific letter-writer, Alice kept in touch with many acquaintances through the years. On March 3, 2018, her 100th birthday, Alice was granted honorary alumna status from Calvin College.
Alice loved the Lord, held firm and strong beliefs, and was a role model for her family. She was faithful and truthful in all things.
Alice is survived by Ken, her husband of 68 years; sister Grace Slager; sister-in-law Nell Klein; children Steve (Rosemary), Jan (Gary) Vander Meer, Doug (Jane), Tim (Dianne), Eunice (David Koller), Paul (Jane), and Mary (Allan) Wolff; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
