HOLCOMB, Mrs. Alice N. of Portage, Michigan Died Wednesday morning October 29, 2014. Alice was born October 3, 1925 in Toledo, Ohio a daughter of Samuel and Alice Watkins Weir. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident since 1947 and was employed with Parchment Public Schools before retiring.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents. On April 5, 1969, she was united in marriage to David E. Holcomb who survives. Also surviving, 3 children, Betsy Michael Covell Breseman and Thomas Covell all of Kalamazoo, and William Michelle Covell of Schoolcraft; 2 grandchildren, Andy and Samantha Covell; 4 step children; 9 step grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Weir of Ludington, MI; a sister, Janet White of Cleveland, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
Alice grew up in Toledo. She was an accomplished artist, attending University of Toledo, art school in Cincinnati where she was a member of the Three Arts Club, and, in 1969, she earned a degree in art education from Western Michigan University. Her artwork appeared in numerous juried and invited gallery shows. Her crowning achievement was a series of colored pencil drawings of her interpretation of the political satire and history behind the Mother Goose rhymes. These she and husband David printed up into a book of drawings and text.
Alice was an avid reader of many topics, but her favorites were anything dealing with English history. Her trip and tour of Japan was a highlight of her life. Alice was known for her droll sense of humor, her kindness and generosity; she was giving, honest, and intelligent. Above all, Alice was loved.
