Alice Priscilla Hofmann, (née Klingensmith), daughter of Willey P. and Gertrude P. Klingensmith (both deceased), sister of Virginia K Rothrock, beloved wife of Ulrich K. O. Hofmann, mother of Laura P. Hofmann and Christopher U. Hofmann, mother-in-law to Patricia A. Hofmann, and grandmother to William C. Hofmann, passed away quietly Tuesday night March 9, 2010 at her home surrounded by family.
Alice Hofmann was a native of Chicago, IL. She attended Saturday Drawing Classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, and took Life Drawing and Fundamentals at American Academy of Art, Chicago. Upon graduation from the University of Illinois, having been awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, in 1958-59 she went on to teach 1st and then 2nd grade at the Public School on the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation in Northern Wisconsin. The Indians were the Lac du Flambeau Band of the Lake Superior Chippewas, or, more accurately, Ojibwe, people of Longfellow’s “Hiawatha”. This was followed by elementary teaching in Chicago. Classroom art instruction had been part of her job requirement, but she had to upgrade her skills to be able to substitute for a teacher of a class of deaf students in the same school. She resigned her position to be with her husband who had been drafted into the US Army in January 1966. She landed a teaching assignment for the US Army at Ft. Riley, KS. The task was to prepare GIs for taking GEDs. In 1968, Army life was left behind, and Alice, her husband, and their first child returned to Chicago. In 1973, her husband’s firm transferred the family (now 4) to Denver. After moving to Colorado, she entered the Commercial Art program at Arapahoe Community College, Littleton, CO., and took many short workshops through Heritage Fine Arts Guild. Weeklong workshops with Betty DeMaree and William H. Condit were very inspiring.
In 1988, with both children in college, the family moved to the Tulsa, OK area. Alice took advantage of programs offered by the Oklahoma Art Workshops. In 1994 she received two awards at the Designs of Autumn Festival, Miami, OK. Her husband eventually went into retirement, and soon they returned to Colorado to again become residents of Littleton, CO.
Her other activities included being a 50-year+ PEO, Some Riverwalk community activities, and reading for Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFBD) as long as she was able.
In her art she strove to express her delight and fascination with the world around her.
In addition to being a watercolorist, Alice did work as a freelance commercial artist, illustrator and calligrapher.
