Alice Hitchings, age 93, of Rensselaer, Indiana passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Franciscan Health Rensselaer. Alice was born in Iroquois County, Illinois on January 23, 1924, the daughter of Elsie (Small) and Theodore Wichman. She attended school in Milford and Stockland, Illinois, graduating with the Class of 1941 from Stockland High School.
Alice continued her education at Illinois State Normal University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1946. On November 25, 1948, in Stockland, Illinois Alice married Harold Hitchings. They later moved to Rensselaer in 1951. Alice began her teaching career at the Sheldon (Ill) Schools and later taught at the Jordan Township School in Jasper County, Indiana. Alice enjoyed being a homemaker, mother, grandmother, a great-grandmother and most recently a great-great grandmother.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Rensselaer. Surviving Alice is her loving family, daughter Nancy M. Bailey of Rensselaer; son Melvin (wife Mary) Hitchings of Brook, Indiana; grandchildren Michael (Lisa) Hitchings, Jeffrey Hitchings, Brandy (husband Tim) Warran, Ryan (wife Mari) Meunier and Kara (husband Bill) Parker; great grandchildren Lucas (Allison) Hitchings, Nickolas (Danni) Hitchings, Payton Lee Hitchings, Josie Lynn Hitchings, Brett Bulington, Evan Bulington and Ryanna Meunier, Sydney, Mason and Callie Jo Warran, and Austin, Conner and Emily Parker; and great great grandchildren Emreigh Hitchings, Levi Hitchings and Carter Hitchings.
Preceding Alice in death were her parents Elsie and Theodore Wichman, her husband Harold on April 2, 1999, her brothers Robert Wichman and Don Wichman, and granddaughter-in-law Kaitlin Hitchings in 2012.
