With sadness and a deep sense of loss, the family and friends of Alice Faye Yates announce her death on March 16, 2017, at Wellbrooke Health Center in Crawfordsville, following a long period of illness. Alice was born on September 14, 1948, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the only daughter of Bernard and Faye (Tolley) Yates. Although throughout an impressive career she traveled much of the world, for the majority of her life she called Crawfordsville home.
Alice was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School and Indiana Business College. She began her career in the Travel Department at the Elston Bank in Crawfordsville in 1967 and moved with that department when it was acquired by the American Automobile Association, becoming the Branch Office Manager in Crawfordsville. It was during this time that she and her lifelong friend Barbara Baldauf purchased their home on Lake Holiday, a retreat Alice referred to as “Tara,” for the rest of her life. The travel industry took her to The Travel Center in Indianapolis where she served as Vice President of Operations and developed, operated, and delivered a curriculum for a travel agent training school. She returned to Crawfordsville in 1988 to open Full Circle Travel, an agency that handled much of the business and personal travel of Crawfordsville residents until she closed the business in 2003. Throughout all these years, Alice traveled the world from Europe and Scandinavia to Southeast Asia and India.
Following her career in travel, Alice pursued business consulting opportunities where she worked in office management for Dr. Charles Turner in Lafayette, and from 2006 to 2008, served as interim Registrar for Meadville Lombard Theological School, at the University of Chicago. On returning to Crawfordsville in 2008, Alice became the Senior Program Director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department where she transformed the Sunshine Van Program. In her roles as a business entrepreneur and civic leader, Alice dedicated her life and her energy to the quality of life in her hometown and the health and welfare of her multitude of friends.
