Alice Fay (1926 – 2013)
Alice Fay, formerly of Milledgeville, Ga., died peacefully at her residence of Belvedere Commons after
suffering a stroke on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Louis E.
Fay III; her sister, Anne M. Awtrey; her son, Louis E. Fay IV; and her parents, Robert K. Awtrey and
Isabel M. Warren.
She is survived by her brother, Robert K. Awtrey, Jr.; four children, Anne M. Fay, Robert A. Fay,
John F. Fay, and S. Delia Fay; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Alice studied chemistry at Radcliffe University and University of California Berkeley. She spent her career
teaching at colleges and universities in Ames, Iowa; Detroit, Mich.; Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Kenya in Africa;
Trinidad, West Indies; Greenville and Anderson, S.C.; and finally at Milledgeville, Ga. During her later years
she and her husband spent their summers in South America collecting ferns.

She lost her sight in 2003 and spent the last nine years of her life completely blind. Two months
before her 84th birthday, she announced that she wanted to learn how to sing and promptly signed up for
voice lessons. Her singing was her great joy for the last two years of her life.
She will be cremated and her ashes inurned at St.
