Alice Pomper, of 52 Missionary Road, Cromwell, died of natural causes on Sunday, February 26, 2017. She was born on July 5, 1940, the eldest child of the late Dr. Bernard S. Epstein and the late Catherine Reiser Epstein, and raised in Great Neck, New York. She received an undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, where she was a talented Russian language student. Alice married Philip Pomper in August, 1961. They lived in Moscow prior to the birth of their first child, Erica, born in Helsinki in 1963, and then in Amsterdam. Though Erica faced significant developmental challenges, Alice was determined to ensure Erica’s learning and joy, and provide her with enriching experiences. With Alice’s tutoring, Erica learned to read and developed a deep appreciation for classical music, the arts, family, and family traditions. Motivated by her longstanding wish for a large family, Alice and Philip had two other children, Stephen Pomper of Washington, D.C, and Karen Manning, of Newton, Massachusetts. They lived in Middletown, where Alice found her calling in serving children with special needs. She served as a Board Member of MARC Community Resources (and Chairman for several years) throughout the 1980s and in years to follow. She worked with determination to address complex challenges and provide the highest level of care within the MARC community.
