Alice was the daughter of the late George Washington Byrd, Sr. and Lorena Gertrude Byrd of Erwin, North Carolina. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Erwin Mills, now Burlington Industries. She is a former resident of Durham and attended Grove Park Chapel.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Russell M. Scarborough, Sr., her stepson Russell M. (Rusty) Scarborough, Jr. of Durham, her brother, Waymon T. Byrd, and her sister Louise B. Sheppard, both of Erwin. She is survived by her two children from a previous marriage, Sylvia Dawne Porter Gregory of Raleigh and James Russell (Jimmy) Porter, Sr.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Hillside Nursing Center for their loving care of our mother these last few years and we are very grateful for their kindness and support shown to our family throughout her stay.
Whenever we visited Mom, she would tell us as we were leaving, “Be careful going home, and thanks for everything.” Today, we say to her “Mom, you are home now, and thank you for everything!” We will always love you, and will miss your sweet smile, your beautiful blue eyes, your wonderful wit, and your faithful prayers for us.”
