Alfred Russell Zabel, age 79, of Elgin, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Aperion Care in Elgin with his loving family by his side.
He was born August 16, 1942, in Chicago, the son of Clair and Loretta (Stockwell) Zabel.
Alfred was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He grew up in Chicago and graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology. After working as a math and science teacher at Coltrap Middle School in Geneva, West Chicago High School, and Wheaton North High School, he opened his own business: Zabel Auto Electric. His remanufacturing business thrived for almost 40 years as a staple on Geneva’s west side. While running his business day-to-day was challenging, it wasn’t enough to keep this ambitious man busy – Alfred had a multitude of hobbies. Riding his motorcycles and travelling were two of his favorite past times. He obtained his private pilot’s license so he could take his family on trips across the U.S. – the only state he never made it to was Alaska. Alfred also enjoyed flying RC airplanes and was a long time member of the Fox Valley Aero Club. In addition, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting trips with his friends and grandson.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years Maria (Segarra); children Christine (John) Pehlke of Batavia, Peter of Elgin, Russell (Heidi) of N. Carolina, and Andrew of California; grandchildren Wesley, Kyle, Olivia, Sophie, Andrew Jr, and Ian; brothers Gerald (Sandra) of Illinois and Bruce (Susan) of Oregon; and many other dear relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
