Alfred “Judge” Newvine Sr., 93, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday, June 3, at Eastlake Terrace.

He was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Saginaw, Mich., to Frank and Emma (Grossman) Newvine.

Survivors include four daughters, Robin (William) McIntyre of Elkhart, Sandra Katzel of Ingleside, Ill., SharonLee Hansen of Northglenn, Colo., and Diana (Barry) Singleton of South Bend; son Alfred Jr. (Julia Johnson) Newvine of Elkhart; brother Charles Newvine of St. Charles, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine E. (Broadworth) Newvine, three brothers, and four sisters.

Alfred worked for the Grand Trunk Railroad during World War II and later was a justice of the peace, conservation officer, and sheriff of Hamel Beach, Mich., for many years. Prior to retirement, Alfred worked at various RV manufacturers in the Elkhart area and for Elkhart General Hospital for nearly 10 years.

He was a member of DAV Chapter 19, Bristol American Legion Post 143 and Elkhart Moose Lodge 599.

Al’s sense of humor would make anyone smile. Al loved working in his garden and sharing his vegetables with everyone. His favorite pastime was working on his black walnuts from his walnut tree. Al loved to play bingo. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing and was a fast pitch pitcher in his earlier years.
