Alfred J. “Al” Economu, 85, of 34 Hoover Street, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at his home.
Al and his wife, the former Peggy Lou Blaso, celebrated 61 years of marriage on January 24, 2009.
Al retired as plant manager from the former Ille Electric Corp.
Al had been active in church and community work in Elmont, L.I.N.Y., before moving to Williamsport. He was active in his church, the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as building committee chairman, secretary to the Sunday school for years and was a trustee. He also served in the Elmont Volunteer Fire Company Engine #3 and was First Lieutenant when he moved here.
After moving to the Williamsport area in 1957, he was active and the treasurer with the Loyalsock Pool committee which raised money to build the Loyalsock pool. He was a member of the Loyalsock school board for eleven years serving as president for two years. He served on the Loyalsock recreation board for ten years, five years as chairman. He was very active and president for two years of the Williamsport Industrial Management Club. He was active, a charter member and president for two years of the Williamsport Purchasing Association.
Al is a member and very active in the Memorial Baptist Church, serving as president of the Monroe Lape Sunday School Class several times. He was active and treasurer of the former Memorial Christian School. He was a trustee for many years, served on several pulpit supply committees and is presently a deacon.
Al also served on the Hope Enterprises board since 1969 and was president for two years. He was one of five men who started the workshop. He was active with Score, part of the Small Business Administration, as a counselor since 1997 and resigned in 2009 because of his health.
Born October 27, 1924 in East Elmhurst, L.I.N.Y., he was the son of C. John and Anna Speiss Economu.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughters, Betty Lou Wheeland of Loyalsock and Peggy Ann (Rod) Nail of Coconut Creek, Fla.; four grandchildren, Brent and Katie Wheeland and Alexandra and Victoria Nail.
Al was predeceased by his brother, John in 1989 and his sister, Jeannette Krieger, in 2003.
