Alexandra (nee’ Papadopolous) Setnikar of Ridgewood, New Jersey passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 67. Born in Athens, Greece on November 29, 1948, to Michael and Dimitria Papadopoulos, Alexandra was the youngest of two children. She came to New York as a teenager to finish high school in the United States with the intention of returning to Greece. But life had other plans for her. Instead, Alexandra went on to receive her nursing degree and pursued a career that took her to Montefiore hospital, Pascack Valley Hospital and ultimately into the management of private physicians’ offices. In another twist of fate, she ended up at a German dance at the NYC Liederkranz Club, where she had a chance meeting with the man who would become her husband for 42 years, Thomas Setnikar.
Alexandra and her husband, Thomas, moved their young family ‘to the country’ from NYC in the 1970s and chose Ridgewood as their idyllic town to raise their two daughters. On any given weekend, Alexandra could have been found cheering a softball game at Vets field, chaperoning a girl scout event, pushing swings at the Duck Pond, teaching her girls to swim at the Y or working on her beautiful gardens at home. In later years, she would take her pride and joy, her grandkids, to the same swings she took her children decades ago.
Many in Ridgewood would remember Alexandra as ‘Alex’ at Dr. Hatefi’s office. It was there that she spent 25 years helping Dr. Hatefi take care of every patient. And Alex helped everyone. If you needed medical assistance, a favor or a shoulder to cry on, Alex was the one to call. And if you didn’t catch Alex at the doctor’s office, you were sure to catch her every morning at 8:30 chatting someone up over coffee at the counter at the Daily Treat.
In her later years Alexandra would say that America is the greatest country in the world and she never would have had the opportunities she had if she had not come to this country.
Alexandra is survived by her daughters Alexandra and Nerissa, her grandchildren, Melena and Stathy, her son-in-law, Stathy and her brother, Christos.
