Alex Alexiades, of Clearwater Beach, Florida and Woodbridge, Connecticut, business and community leader, left this earthly realm on March 30, 2021. He was born February 11, 1931. Alex was predeceased by his wife Mary 31 years ago. He leaves three children, nine grandchildren, and a great-grandchild: son Elia Alexiades and his fiancé Jill McCarns of Branford; son John and his wife Chris of Manhattan Beach, California; and daughter Clio Nicolakis and her husband Theo; grandchildren Zena, Alexandra, Nicholas, Luc, Reese, Ava and Bash Alexiades, Ephemia and Kassiani Nicolakis, and great-granddaughter Amalia Bond. He is also survived by his beloved niece Effie Mitsopoulou and nephew Dr. Alexander Mitsopoulos, both of Athens, Greece. He was predeceased by his brother Theophilos Alexiadis, sister Anna Mitsopoulou and cousin Zoe Skoulariki of Athens, Greece.
Alex worked his entire professional career for BIC Corporation, starting as an assistant credit manager. Mentored by legendary businessman Marcel Bich, Alex served for years as the chief financial officer. He remained a director of the company until his passing.
Alex also leaves his brothers-in-law and their wives Harry and Pat Pappas and Art and Kris Pappas, and cousin Sophie Caloutas. He was predeceased by his best friend Nick Papadopoulos, who cooked him so many fantastic meals over the years. Alex loved boating in the Gulf of Mexico, taking his grandchildren to Caladesi Island State Park and fishing with cousin Aristide Cecchi of blessed memory.
Alex lived the American dream. He prospered here, having survived the wartime famine and Nazi occupation of Athens, coming to New Haven after the war to finish high school at Hamden Hall. He left Greece with fond memories of his great-uncle Gennadios, Metropolitan of Salonica. He attended the University of Connecticut where he played soccer. Alex loved to watch UConn Women’s Basketball. After serving in the U.S. Army, he completed his education at Quinnipiac University, where he later served 22 years as a trustee.
Among his professional accomplishments, Alex was elected president of both the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association and the Lighter Manufacturers Association. He was an officer of BIC subsidiaries in Canada, Mexico, and Equador. He was a 60 year member of the Order of AHEPA.
