Al attended the Bridgeport public schools and is a 1952 graduate of Warren Harding High School. He enlisted into the Army in 1955, and served two years during the Korean War. After being discharged he served six years in the Active Army Reserves.
 
Al married his beautiful bride Bernice McAllister on February 15, 1964. They have enjoyed 52 years of marriage.
 
One of Al’s life long dreams became a reality when he joined the Bridgeport Police Department in 1960. Al was the fourth black policeman assigned to the department and later he was one of the officers chosen to be on the elite Tactical Squad Unit.
 
Al was one of the founding fathers and organizers of the Bridgeport Guardians, nationally known as the National Black Policemen Association. He was also honored as policeman of the year and retired at the rank of Sergeant in 1990.
