Alejandro “Alex” L. Gutierrez, 95, of Galesburg, died at3:58 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Alex was born December 30, 1923 in Comfort, TX the son of Dionicio and Gregorio (Lopez) Gutierrez. He married Ramona J. Gimenez on November 7, 1943 in Galesburg. Ramona preceded Alex in death exactly ten years earlier on May 28, 2009.

Alex is survived by three sons, Ramon (Diana) of Kerrville, TX, Larry M. (Rosemarie) and David both of Galesburg; three daughters, Dolores “Dolly” Sundell, Esther Fox, and Regina Hodge all of Galesburg; and one brother, Alvaro “Al” (Olivia) Gutierrez of Galesburg.

Alex is also survived by twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, Alex was preceded in death by three brothers; one son, Alejandro “Sonny” Gutierrez, Jr.; one daughter, Theresa Gutierrez; and one granddaughter, Alexis Marie Gutierrez.

Alex served in the US Army during WWII with the 116th General Hospital and under General Patton with the 3rd Army. After the Army, Alex worked as a freight handler at C.B.&Q. Railroad for several years, he then worked for Maytag, retiring in 1982.

He was a 29 year member of I.A.M. Local 2063.Alex was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister, usher, and member of the choir. He was also active in S.P.E.C., Cursillo, and W.A.T.C.H.

Alex was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 and a founding member of the Galesburg Chapter of League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Club.

Alex was an avid golfer and a member of the Greenbusters golf league. He was a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan and attended his first game in 1943.

Alex was also able to attend game one of the World Series in 2016. Alex had a wonderful relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and a great love for his family and friends.
